More than any other single artist, Britney Spears was the driving force behind the return of teen pop in the late '90s. The blockbuster success of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys certainly paved the way for her own commercial breakthrough, but Spears didn't just become a star -- she was a bona fide pop phenomenon. Not only did she sell millions of records, she was a media fixture regardless of what she was (or wasn't) doing; among female singers of the era (many of whom followed in her footsteps), her celebrity star power was rivaled only by Jennifer Lopez. From the outset, Spears' sex appeal was an important part of her image. The video for her debut single, "...Baby One More Time," outfitted her in full Catholic-school regalia and sent her well on the way to becoming an international sex symbol. Yet Spears' handlers seemed to be trying to have it both ways -- there was a definite tension between the wholesome innocence Spears tried to project for her female audience, and the titillating sexuality that enticed so many male fans. Those marketing tactics made Spears a somewhat controversial figure, the subject of endless debates concerning appropriate role models for teenage girls. Early on, Spears tried to defuse the controversy by preaching abstinence until marriage, and even denied that she was consciously cultivating such a sexualized image. Of course, the more provocative and revealing her on-stage wardrobe became, the less plausible that claim seemed. But apart from her ability to tiptoe the line between virginal coquette and brazen tart, Spears had a secret weapon in Swedish pop mastermind Max Martin, who had a hand in the vast majority of her hits as a writer and/or producer. With Martin crafting the sort of contemporary dance-pop and sentimental ballads that made stars of the Backstreet Boys, Spears kept on delivering the goods commercially, as her first three albums all topped the charts.

Britney Jean Spears was born December 2, 1981, in the small town of Kentwood, LA, and began performing as a singer and dancer at a young age. With a nationally televised appearance on Star Search already under her belt, Spears auditioned for the Disney Channel's The New Mickey Mouse Club at age eight. The producers turned her down as too young, but one of them took an interest and introduced her to an agent in New York. Spears spent the next three years studying at the Professional Performing Arts School, and also appeared in several television commercials and off-Broadway plays. At 11, she returned to The New Mickey Mouse Club for a second audition, and this time made the cut. Although her fellow Mouseketeers included an impressive array of future stars -- *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez, Christina Aguilera, and Felicity actress Keri Russell -- the show was canceled after Spears' second season. She returned to New York at age 15 and set about auditioning for pop bands and recording demo tapes, one of which eventually landed her a deal with Jive Records.

Spears entered the studio with top writer/producers like Eric Foster White (Boyzone, Whitney Houston, Backstreet Boys) and Max Martin (Ace of Base, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC). In late 1998, Jive released her debut single, the Martin-penned "...Baby One More Time." Powered by its video, in which Spears and a troupe of dancers were dressed as Catholic-school jailbait, the single shot to the top of the Billboard charts. When Spears' debut album of the same title was released in early 1999, it entered the charts at number one and stayed there for six weeks. Once the ubiquitous lead single died down, the album kept spinning off hits: the Top Ten "(You Drive Me) Crazy," the near-Top 20 ballad "Sometimes," and the Top 20 "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart." By the end of 1999, ...Baby One More Time had sold ten million copies, and went on to sell a good three million more on top of that. Its success touched off a wave of young pop divas that included Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jessica Simpson, and Mandy Moore. Spears was a superstar, drooled over in countless magazines, including a Rolling Stone cover that prompted immediate speculation about the still-17 year old having gotten breast implants.

By the time ...Baby One More Time finally started to lose steam on the singles and album charts, Spears was ready to release her follow-up. Oops!...I Did It Again appeared in the spring of 2000, and the title track was an instant smash, racing into the Top Ten. The album entered the charts at number one and sold over a million copies in its first week of release, setting a new record for single-week sales by a female artist. Follow-up singles included "Lucky," the gold-selling "Stronger," and "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know," which was co-written by country diva Shania Twain and her producer Mutt Lange. A year after its release, Oops!...I Did It Again had sold over nine million copies. Rumors that Spears was dating *N Sync heartthrob (and fellow ex-Mouseketeer) Justin Timberlake were eventually confirmed, which only added to the media attention lavished on her.

For her next album, Spears looked ahead to a not-so-distant future when both she and much of her audience would be growing up. Released in late 2001, Britney tried to present the singer as a more mature young woman, and was accompanied by mild hints that her personal life wasn't always completely puritanical. It became her third straight album to debut at number one, although this time around the singles weren't as successful; "I'm a Slave 4 U," "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," and "Overprotected" all missed the Top Ten. In early 2002, Spears' feature-film debut, Crossroads, hit theaters, but its commercial performance was somewhat disappointing; moreover, her romance with Timberlake fizzled not long after. Spears next made a cameo appearance in Mike Myers' Austin Powers: Goldmember, and contributed a remix of "Boys" to the soundtrack. Meanwhile, sales of Britney stalled at four million copies, perhaps in part because a new breed of teenage female singer/songwriters, like Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne, was emerging as an alternative to the highly packaged teen queens. Spears took a break from recording and performing for several months, and began work on a new album in early 2003. The results, In the Zone, reflected a wish to be taken seriously as a mature (though still highly sexualized) adult. Predictably, it topped the charts and launched several singles into orbit, including the musically adventurous "Toxic," "Everytime," and "Me Against the Music."

In the Zone hit number one on the Billboard 200, and "Toxic" snagged a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. But by 2004 there were no longer any illusions of Britney's personal life being all wholesome candy canes and kisses. First there was the star's bizarre two-day marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander, followed by the controversial, highly sexualized Onyx Hotel tour, which was eventually canceled (allegedly because of a knee injury) despite positive financial numbers. Starbucks and cigarettes were Britney's constant accessories in the endless paparazzi photos, and the revelation of her relationship with former backup dancer Kevin Federline made the tabloids even more ravenous. Spears and Federline married in September and were tabloid regulars in the months after the ceremony. (A photo of a barefoot Britney leaving a dingy gas station bathroom made the Internet rounds.) The couple also starred in Chaotic, a UPN reality show consisting mostly of their own home videos that was met with howls from the critics and blogs.

2005 was no less eventful for Spears. She released Greatest Hits: My Prerogative that January, but it was the announcement of her pregnancy that really garnered the headlines. Sean Preston Federline was born in September, and a bidding war ensued for first rights to the baby photos. As the hubbub surrounding Sean's birth continued, Britney released a remix album just in time for the holiday season. In 2006, Spears discovered she was pregnant again; shortly after the birth of her second son, Jayden James Federline, she divorced Federline. Early in 2007, Spears went to Malibu, CA's Promises Treatment Center; when she left, she began working on her comeback album and performed a few small shows at House of Blues locations in Los Angeles, San Diego, Anaheim, and Las Vegas that May. Despite ongoing turmoil in her life that summer and fall -- including a disastrous performance at MTV's Video Music Awards -- Blackout arrived in October 2007. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

One of the most popular teen-affiliated groups of the 2000s, the Jonas Brothers' craft hook-filled power pop anthems in the vein of McFly, Hanson, and the Modern Lovers. The young New Jersey natives (while readying their 2006 debut, brothers Joseph, Kevin, and Nicholas Jonas topped out at 16, 17, and 13, respectively) were reared in the city of Wyckoff under the tutelage of musical parents. Nicholas showed a particular flair for singing; by the age of seven, he'd already begun a modest career as a Broadway performer. The young performer also took an interest in songwriting, even co-writing a Christmas tune in 2002 alongside his father. Several years later, his soulful voice had wowed enough executives at Daylight/Columbia Records to warrant a solo album, and Nicholas began writing original material with help from his two brothers. The siblings' songs impressed the president of Columbia, who ultimately signed the trio in 2005.

The Jonas Brothers' full-length debut, It's About Time, was released in August 2006. Featuring the songwriting talents of Desmond Child and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, the album peaked at number 91 on the Billboard charts and earned the siblings a modest audience, particularly among fans of Radio Disney. Nevertheless, the Jonas Brothers were dropped from Columbia's roster in early 2007. They bounced back by signing with Hollywood Records, a Disney-owned label that helped the group exponentially expand its fanbase. An eponymous sophomore album, Jonas Brothers, arrived in August 2007, supported by a number of Jonas Brothers appearances on the Disney Channel's various programs. The band also toured in support of the record, selling out shows coast to coast -- including a stop at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles, which was the fastest sold-out show in the venue's history. The reality television show Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream documented the band's life on the road, and the band's TV presence was furthered along by Camp Rock, a 2008 Disney Channel television movie that featured the brothers and up-and-coming star Demi Lovato. The movie was watched by 8.9 million viewers and launched the Jonas Brothers' next single, "Burnin' Up," which helped whet demand for the release of A Little Bit Longer later that year.~ James Christopher Monger & Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

Thursday, October 9, 2008
Official Press Release

A new addition to the Warner Premiere Motion Comics slate, “Batman: Black & White” is taken from three award-winning volumes of short stories starring the Caped Crusader. The Motion Comics will reflect the original and diverse visions of various artists and writers as they tell stories in the now-infamous world of Gotham City.

The “Batman: Black & White” stories are told from the perspective of Batman and range in theme from the unsettling drama of solving a brutal murder to the light comedy of fighting bad guys with a broken nose. These short episodes also touch on elements of romance, mystery and even the supernatural. And like any exciting Batman story, classic villains such as The Joker, Harley Quinn and Two-Face make heralded appearances. It’s Batman as seen through the prism of some of today’s most eloquent graphic artists and writers.

Depp, Hoffman Rumors Legit?

Here's Philip Seymour Hoffman's response to those Penguin rumors (via THE STONE REPORT):

Some friend of mine told me he read that [Hoffman as The Penduin rumor - Jett]. First I heard of it. I don’t think so."

“I grew up a comic book fan, so I love that stuff. I love going to that stuff. I think what they’re doing with that whole Batman story is really true to what that whole Batman thing has always been. It’s one of the darkest origins of a superhero, to get all nerdy and geeky on you. That character sees his parents gunned down as a young child. I remember when I was a kid reading that story, so seeing it now come to life as the dark tale that it really is as an intense, really dark, very visceral, adult tale that they’re doing now, all the great work people are doing on it, of course I wouldn’t say, ‘Well, no, no no.’ But I don’t know the reality of it, so I wouldn’t say ‘yes’ to you."

Remember, the Hoffman-as-The Penguin rumor has been around since about 2006 -- well before THE DARK KNIGHT was even filming. Honestly, I don't put much stock into it myself at this point, but just like Johnny Depp as The Riddler, I'd certainly welcome it if it panned out. Thanks to "Chris M." for the heads up...

Speaking of Oswald Cobblepott, I know Chris Nolan was quoted as saying that the character is too "unrealistic," I must beg to differ. Here's how I see him:

"Owner of 'The Iceberg Lounge' who fancies himself a Gotham aristocrat. Short of stature and possessing a huge, beak-like nose, Obblepott has acquired the moniker of 'The Penguin.' While outwardly a legitimate businessman, Cobblepott has long had ties to the Gotham City underworld. With Carmine Falcone incapacitated and the city’s other major mob bosses -- Sal Maroni, Gambol, and The Chechen -- dead, Cobblepot has now set his eyes on Gotham’s organized crime throne."

Or something like that...

Frank Miller's place in "Batman History" is secure, but I DO NOT want to see this man anywhere near a Batman film. Why? Well, he'd like Sylvester Stallone to play Batman in a film adaptation of his THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Uh, NO.

2:00 PM TEXAS TIME: You know how Sir Michael Caine likes to talk, right? Well, he's taking a bit about BATMAN 3 and is saying that the Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman rumors are for real. Check this out (via MTV):

“When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do ‘The Dark Knight’ next, I didn’t what that meant in Batman terms,” related Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘What’s the story?’ and he said The Joker. I said, ‘Oh, s–t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve cast Heath Ledger. And I went ‘Ha! I couldn’t top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.’ And he did."

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]

Take that for what you will. But I'd certainly be down with the casting of Depp (He's actually one of my favorite actors) and Hoffman...

No Movement on "BATMAN 3"

That is what I said a few days ago about some early "pre" on the next BATMAN"

"So how far along is the next Bat-Flick? My guess is not very far at all. I believe that writers David Goyer and Jonah Nolan both have an idea of what they’d like to do, but there certainly isn’t a screenplay yet. Goyer himself said (at the TDK press junket in June '08) that Chris Nolan didn’t contact him about doing another one until three months after BATMAN BEGINS. Remember, we didn’t get the official word on THE DARK KNIGHT until July of 2006 -- a full year after BATMAN BEGINS’ run in theaters."

And...

Now, I do not think that a third BATMAN will actually begin filming next February, but I do think that if all this is indeed true pre-production in some capacity just might be commencing early next year."

Alright then. Somehow this rumor saying there might be some very early, pre pre-production sprouted legs and took a life of its own! With that said, it goes to show you how much another Chris Nolan-directed BATMAN is desired by the masses. Anyway...

According to IESB.NET, there is no active work being done right now on a third Chris Nolan BATMAN, other than the fact that the studio wants to do one and they want Chris to helm it.

Again, I say look at the timeframe provided by BATMAN BEINGS and THE DARK KNIGHT for some insight one what we can expect officially on "BATMAN 3." And on a related note...

IESB.NET's source said the JUSTICE LEAGUE is dead until the time is "right" (Whatever *rolls eyes*) and a GREEN LANTERN film is coming soon as has been rumored (Yes!).

HALE repacks HALE

Hale Repackaged album boasts a brand new single called TOLL GATE is another straight-ahead song the band has ever created. But nevertheless, from the band’s self-titled album brings their latest and fifth single BLUE SKY which is now hitting the charts in radios. Watch out for BLUE SKY’s music videos and you’ll see another groundbreaking drama from the band and its director, Marie Jamora.

The best-selling release for EMI Philippines for 2005 belongs to Hale. This alternative rock foursome stepped up the plate with their debut, self-titled Hale. Hale’s dynamics involved the making of their self-titled album to HALE REPACKAGED.

As the repackaged album’s carrier single, collective effort from the band made TOLL GATE something to look forward to with its uncannily smart and poetic lyrics as what Hale is known for. “We injected different kinds of elements that weren't visible on previous releases that make it more unique and interesting,” Champ Lui-Pio, the band’s front man added.

Asked why the title TOLL GATE for another sentimental rock ballad, Champ explains “Toll Gate is our story every time we go home after a long day of work at some point in time.” Members of the band are based in the southern area of Metro Manila (Las Piñas, Alabang and Parañaque). Music video of the band’s new single was directed by Sig Sanchez. This will definitely give you another journey from the toll gate to real life event.

THE DAY YOU SAID GOODNIGHT, encompassing everything that brought Hale their monumental success in one five-minute track and have scaled the height of hit lists for 2005 as song of the year, is now with acoustic version. Again, something borrowed from their debut album, strong melody and beautifully crafted THE DAY… in acoustic version still sounds as fresh as the original.

Music videos from the band’s indelible hit after another like BROKEN SONNET, THE DAY YOU SAID GOODNIGHT, KAHIT PA and KUNG WALA will surely complete the whole package for you to see how Hale became a household name of Pinoy rock.

From their numerous stage performances from different places in the archipelago, Hale journeys a success with Triple Platinum self-titled debut album and bagged several awards. Hale has recently been nominated for the 2006 MTV Asia Awards, Asia’s largest gathering of artists in Bangkok. Moreover at the annual AWIT Awards has proven a reap of their success as a young band as they bagged the year’s Best Ballad for THE DAY YOU SAID GOODNIGHT and People’s Choice for Favorite Band.

But concerning the band’s hectic schedule and probably their visibility everywhere, Champ shares “We're really talking it one step at a time. It was a conscious effort for us to lay low the last couple of months just to re-group and rest. Things have been good to us and we are just having the time of our lives.”

Melodious drama as how they describe their music, Hale namely Champ Lui-Pio on vocals and guitars, Roll Martinez on guitars, Sheldon Gellada on bass and Omnie Sarroca on drums-- have contributed singles that are meditative, reflecting on emotions instead of cathartic blast of noise of rhythm as that of Coldplay singing on the radio. Hale is ultimately big music about small things. Their hits have blasted the charts and won thousands of fans all over the country from their debut album which is now in a special edition plus AVCD.

HALE REPACKAGED is released under EMI Philippines and brought to us by Smart Buddy (text HALE to 234), Pony, Jansport, Manila Bulletin and Eastwood City. Albums are now available in stores.

WESTLIFE - WESTLIFE POSTPONE GIGS DUE TO ILLNESS

rish boy band WESTLIFE have been forced to postpone two gigs on their U.K. tour - because bandmembers SHANE FILAN and NICKY BYRNE have fallen ill.
The Flying Without Wings hitmakers have postponed a show on Monday (19May08) evening in Nottingham, England, and the following night's show on Tuesday (20May08) in Cardiff, Wales, after a doctor advised the singers to rest in order to recover properly.
A statement from the band reads, "We are very sorry to have to postpone these shows at such short notice, we apologise to all our fans, and we can't wait to get back out there and put on a great show for you.
"Hold onto your tickets and we'll see you soon, Westlife."
The tour is set to continue on Thursday (22May08) in Birmingham, England. The rescheduled dates will be announced shortly, according to a spokesperson for Westlife.

WESTLIFE star MARK FEEHILY is spearheading a campaign to help fight homophobic bullying in Britain's schools.
The singer - who revealed he was gay in August 2005 - joined Stonewall's campaign because he was bullied as a boy.
He says, "It's not just individual bullying, it's the way kids in classrooms use the word gay to mean bad - gay trainers, a gay jacket they don't like - that needs to be tackled.
"People need to know that a throwaway remark at school will stab certain members of the class in the heart."
Feehily joins Sir Ian MCKellan, The Feeling star Dan Gillespie Sells, and Dannii Minogue in backing the nationwide campaign.

Secondhand Serenade

Early history and first release

John Vesely formed Secondhand Serenade in his home town of Menlo Park in California, USA, in 2004. Vesely was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a musical family and as the son of a professional jazz musician father, commenting that "getting into music was a natural thing" for him. He spent 8 years playing as a bassist in local bands, featuring in a number of acts ranging in style from ska and hardcore to rock and pop.[3] After years of playing bass, he opted for an acoustic guitar and began writing his own songs when he met his wife. She had wanted him to play a song and "serenading her with a bass guitar was out of the question", he has admitted he found his "true calling" when he picked up the guitar.[3]

The pseudonym Secondhand Serenade is a reference to the way in which his songs are 'serenades' sung to his wife. People around the world are merely getting to hear the songs 'second-hand'.[3]

In 2005, Vesely released his debut album titled Awake. It was recorded as a demo, after booking a few days at a San Francisco studio earlier in 2005, "using just an acoustic guitar and his multi-tracked vocals".[4] The album was promoted through the Secondhand Serenade Myspace page and by playing local shows. The CD's were originally sold through mail order with a PayPal account by Vesely, eventually he signed up with distributor TuneCore, making Secondhand Serenade's songs available on music portals including iTunes.[5]

The album experienced tremendous online support, and by the end of 2006 Secondhand Serenade had received millions of plays on Myspace and had been the social-networking site's No. 1 Independent Artist for months. Financially, he was said to be bringing in up to $20,000 a month from downloads and merchandise sales out of his home.[4] He sold over 15,000 copies of the album on his own,[6] and on the strength of these sales and the support, naturally, the labels came knocking. Secondhand Serenade was signed by longtime label executive Daniel Glass, on his new label Glassnote Records, which is distributed through Warners Independent Label Group.[5] In 2006, Rolling Stone announced Secondhand Serenade as #3 in the magazine's reader's poll for Best Myspace Artist.[6]

[edit] Awake re-release

In early 2007, Awake was reissued by Glassnote Records with an additional two songs. It was released on February 6 and gave Vesely his first chartings, debuting at #16 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart[5]. Added success lead to it peaking at #164 on the Billboard 200, #3 on the Top Heatseekers and #19 on the Top Independent Albums chart.[7]

In support of his first label release, Vesely was featured on MTV's You Hear It First, AOL Music's Breakers Yahoo! Music's Who's Next?[5] and appeared on talk show Late Night with Conan O'Brien.[4] He also played numerous shows, including tours with the likes of Hawthorne Heights and The All-American Rejects and at music festivals South By Southwest and along side My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park at Bamboozle.[5][6]

Secondhand Serenade released only one song as a single from the debut album, "Vulnerable". The song spawned a music video, which was created by Frank Borin who was responsible for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' video for hit single "Dani California".[6] "Vulnerable" peaked at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100, #64 on the Pop 100 and #56 on the Hot Digital Songs charts.[8]

[edit] A Twist in My Story

A Twist in My Story was released on February 19, 2008 and features songs from Awake such as "Maybe" and "Your Call," but reproduced with a full band. The bulk of the album however is a list of new songs written by John Vesely and recorded with a full band. Two tracks on A Twist In My Story were produced by famed producer Butch Walker, while the others were produced by former Nine Inch Nails member Danny Lohner. The first single, "Fall For You," was released January 21, 2008. The album was leaked, and was made available for download one month before its official release. On January 28, 2008 the music video for the first single from the album "Fall For You" premiered on the popular MTV show TRL. In support of the release, Secondhand Serenade spent most of March and April touring with American bands Making April, Automatic Loveletter, and The White Tie Affair. Members of his touring band include John Harvey on bass guitar, Lucas Vesely (Vesely's Brother) on keys, Alex Sier on lead guitar, and Tom Breyfoggle on drums.

The first EP by Secondhand Serenade will be released later in 2008, titled From Me to You. The iTunes music store release will contain four exclusive songs, including a cover of the Coldplay song "Fix You". Vesely has also said he will be filming a music video for the next single, "Your Call".[9]

Fm Static Moment Of Truth lyrics

Here we are, in the best years of our lives.
With no way of knowing, when the
Wheel stop spinning cause we don't
Know where we're going...
And here we are, on the best day of our lives.
And it's a go, lets make it last, so cheers you
All to that, 'cause this moment's never comin' back

I used to know her brother, but I never
Knew I loved her, 'till the day she laid her
Eyes on me. Now I'm jumpin' up and down,
She's the only one around, and she means
Every little thing to me

I've got your picture in my wallet, and your
Phone number to call it, and I miss you more,
Whenever I think about you,. I've got
Your mixed tape in my Walkman, been so
Long since we've been talkin' and in a few
More days, we'll both hook up, forever and ever

And here I am, on the west coast of
American and I've been tryin' to think for weeks of
All the ways to ask you, And now
I've brought you to the place, Where I've
Poured my heart out, a million times, for a million
Reasons, To offer it to you
I used to know her brother, but I never
Knew I loved her, 'till the day she laid her

I used to know her brother, but I never
Knew I loved her, 'till the day she laid her
Eyes on me. Now I'm jumpin' up and down,
She's the only one around, and she means
Every little thing to me

I've got your picture in my wallet, and your
Phone number to call it, and I miss you more,
Whenever I think about you,. I've got
Your mixed tape in my Walkman, been so
Long since we've been talkin' and in a few
More days, we'll both hook up, forever and ever

One of the most popular teen
